Esther Dawney-New

Who am I?
I am an Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. My original training was in NHS Nursing (RGN 1982) and Midwifery (RM 1984) which although I no longer practice has given me a broad understanding of health issues. Since qualifying with a Masters degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Surrey University (1997) I have undertaken a number of in-depth training courses at established institutions. These include Couple Counselling and Psychosexual Counselling, also Child and Family therapy.

I am particularly interested in couple relationships, especially those involving new parents, those with long term health conditions or facing end of life.

I am happy to see couples or individuals experiencing all manner of difficulties in their relationship. Whether you come with your partner or alone I offer a safe and confidential setting in which to explore your difficulties.

Examples of some sexual issues may be: General breakdown in your sexual relationship, Loss of sexual desire, Painful intercourse, Difficulties with orgasm, Arousal disorders, Erectile dysfunction, Premature or delayed ejaculation, Addiction to internet pornography.
Other areas I have experience with are depression, bereavement, changes of life, eating disorders, anxiety, phobias and the impact of ill health. Whilst I do not offer a cure for those issues affecting your life I offer to help you explore and understand where the root of the problem lies in your early life and how and why this has shaped you. This involves sometimes painful or upsetting feelings but ultimately is releasing and liberating you to live a more full life.

As well as working in the NHS for many years I have been employed by several charities, including MIND and Positive Action on Cancer as a counsellor. I am an accredited member of the British Association of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervisors and have experience supervising diploma students as well as qualified counsellors. I supervise students on the diploma training at Wessex Counselling Service and am a member of the training committee. I see individuals for private supervision.

I am committed to on-going professional development with supervision and training in accordance with my professional body the BACP. I adhere to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Where it is apparent that your difficulties require medical attention, with your consent I will refer as appropriate.
