Erika Wiesenmueller-Potter

I am an experienced Counsellor and Registered and Accredited Member of the British Association Erika Wiesenmueller-Potterof Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I have been counselling individuals since 2001 in a wide range of settings including Bath University, Bath City College, a GP surgery, an Employee Assistance Programme and in Private Practice. I was also a Trustee of the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling.

Before training as a counsellor I taught for 19 years in Secondary and Higher Education.

I see people with anxiety, depression, stress, work-related and health problems, relationship and family issues, bereavement, low self-esteem, personal and emotional distress.

I also see people whose lives may or may not be pressured by immediate problems but who are curious about, and wish to gain greater self-awareness through self-exploration and self-development.

The way we think about ourselves shapes our moods, emotions and behaviour to a significant extent. The sum of these thoughts and feelings profoundly influences our sense of self-worth and how we deal with life. Gaining a better understanding of yourself and the impact of emotional problems is key to making lasting changes and to resolving persistent or recurring distress.

Counselling is changing rapidly and I am particularly interested in the developing fields of Mindfulness, Positive Psychology and the Neurobiology of Emotions. I have integrated aspects of all these approaches in my counselling practice and find them transformative in work with depression and anxiety, stress, negative thinking and low self-esteem.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling, (Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling), an MA in Modern European Cultural History, a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education and a first degree in History and German.

I take part in continuous professional development and regular professional supervision for my clinical practice. I work in accordance with the Ethical Framework for Good Practice of BACP.
